Estimating Annular and Abandonment Grout Volumes
The Problem
Grouting the annular space between a casing and its carrier pipe, or filling an abandoned line, is an ordering problem with an awkward geometry: the volume you need is the difference of two cylinders, and being wrong in either direction is expensive. Short means a cold joint in the middle of a fill that's supposed to be monolithic and a truck on emergency order; long means paying for CLSM you pour on the ground.
The Approach
Three modes, all straightforward geometry in cubic feet with diameters in inches:
Annular: V = π/4 × (D_casing² − D_carrier²) / 144 × L
Abandonment: V = π/4 × D_ID² / 144 × L Structure: V = L × W × depth
Output lands in cubic yards, gallons, and sacks with an overage percentage on top. The gallons line exists because grout plants batch by the cubic foot and pump strokes get sized in gallons, while ready-mix CLSM arrives in ~10 CY trucks — the same estimate has to talk to both [3].
The estimate is for ordering; the vent is for acceptance. Grout goes in at the low end and the job is done when it returns at the high-end vent — not when the calculator says the void should be full. If those two disagree, the void was never the shape the drawing said it was.
The buoyancy trap inside the annulus
An empty carrier pipe in a flooded annulus floats — hard. An air-filled HDPE carrier in fluid grout generates serious uplift per foot, pinning the carrier against the casing crown and ruining the spacer geometry. The fixes are standard: fill the carrier with water first, grout in stages so earlier lifts set before the head builds, or use restrained spacers per the plan. Cellular (foamed) grout is popular for big annular fills partly for this reason — less density differential against the carrier, and it flows farther at lower pressure. Its yields come from the supplier's mix design, not a standard table.
For abandonments, most specs want the line verified full: bulkheads both ends, fill from the low end, and don't forget that laterals and structures on the run take grout too — the tool's overage entry is where that judgment lives. Single file, vanilla JS, localStorage persistence [1][2].
